The Kharkiv Freedom Square Revival Competition, organized by the Norman Foster Foundation, Buildner, the Kharkiv City Council, and UNECE, seeks visionary proposals for redesigning Kharkiv’s Freedom Square and the Regional Administration Building. These areas, steeped in historical and cultural significance, represent an opportunity for renewal as Kharkiv looks toward a prosperous future. Proposals should provide holistic design solutions, enhancing the square’s human interaction and reimagining the Administration Building’s Soviet-era architecture to reflect modern Ukrainian society.
Freedom Square & Regional Administration Building
Freedom Square, the second-largest city square in Europe, has long been a central venue for public gatherings in Kharkiv. The competition aims to transform this vast, underutilized space into a vibrant hub for daily activities. The adjacent Regional Administration Building, a prominent symbol of Kharkiv’s Soviet past, offers the chance for architectural renewal. Designers are encouraged to honor Kharkiv’s heritage while embracing modern aspirations.
