Work has accelerated on the King Fahd Sports City Stadium development project, with excavation work now underway after the removal of the iconic tent that covered the stadium.

These efforts are part of a comprehensive plan to prepare the stadium to host matches during the 2027 AFC Asian Cup and the 2034 World Cup.

Tent Removal and Excavation Work Begins

In a significant step toward modernizing the stadium, the Ministry of Sports announced in December 2023 the start of the removal of the tent that covered the stadium, in preparation for comprehensive development work.

This was followed by the removal of the old seats and facilities, paving the way for the commencement of excavation and preparation work for the new infrastructure.

The King Fahd Sports City Stadium Development Project includes several phases aimed at modernizing and expanding the facilities to meet international standards:

The stadium’s capacity will be increased to 70,200 spectators, with future plans to increase capacity to more than 90,000 spectators to meet the growing demand for major tournaments.

Improving Sports Facilities:


The development includes the construction of five turf fields, two FIFA-certified training pitches, a football academy, and running and cycling tracks, enhancing the experience for athletes and visitors.

Recreational and Commercial Facilities:


A sports store, a sports museum, multiple points of sale, a multi-purpose hall, golf and futsal courses, as well as a theater and exhibition space will be built, making the stadium an integrated sports and entertainment hub.
