Kristal Observation Tower: Slovenia’s Tallest Building

Home » News » Kristal Observation Tower: Slovenia’s Tallest Building

The Slovenian studio Korpnik Produkcija has unveiled its latest architectural feat, the Kristal Observation Tower, in the spa town of Rogaška Slatina. Topped by an angular glass cafe resembling a crystal, this 106-metre-tall concrete tower is now the tallest building in Slovenia.

Design and Intent

Designed in collaboration with structural engineers Ponting, the Kristal Observation Tower aims to be a “respectful” connector between the historic 19th-century spa complex and the modern urban center of Rogaška Slatina. According to Nande Korpnik, founder of Korpnik Produkcija, the architectural challenge was to blend the old city structure with the new urban environment. The design harmoniously integrates different architectural styles, ensuring the coexistence of neo-historical, modern, and contemporary architecture.

Structure and Features

The base of the tower features a triangular concrete structure that includes a glazed entrance. This section houses a visitor center, shop, toilets, a lift, and a fire-escape stair. The lift shaft on the eastern side of the tower is fully glazed, offering visitors views towards Zdravilske Park as they ascend.

At the top, the observation level and cafe are enclosed within a crystalline glazed form, symbolizing the region’s glassmaking heritage. Inside the cafe, a central bar is surrounded by seating, providing panoramic views. A circular window in the floor adds a unique perspective down to the tower’s base.

Geometric Design

The geometric forms of concrete and glass were chosen to ensure that the tower does not prioritize any particular direction, offering views of both the historic and modern parts of the town. This design creates a dynamic and interesting appearance. The base and entrance are directed towards one direction, while the glass head of the cafe and panoramic floor are oriented towards the old city center.

Panoramic Views

At the tower’s peak, an open-air terrace with a two-meter-high glass fence provides unobstructed 360-degree views of the surrounding landscape. This feature allows visitors to fully appreciate the scenic beauty of Rogaška Slatina from the tallest vantage point in Slovenia.

The Kristal Observation Tower exemplifies how modern architecture can respect and integrate historical contexts while offering innovative and functional design.
