Chinese technology brand Lenovo has introduced a groundbreaking prototype, claiming it to be the “world’s first ultraslim solar-powered PC.” The new device, showcased at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, looks like a regular laptop but integrates solar technology to run on sunlight.
Innovative Solar-Powered Laptop Design
The concept, named Yoga Solar PC, replaces the standard top panel of a laptop with edge-to-edge solar cells, allowing it to harness solar energy to supplement its power needs. This means the laptop could operate for extended periods without requiring a power outlet.
According to Lenovo, the device is capable of converting 20 minutes of direct sunlight into up to one hour of video playback, demonstrating significant efficiency.
High-Efficiency Solar Technology
The Yoga Solar PC maintains a 15-millimetre thickness and weighs 1.22 kilograms, making it similar in size to Lenovo’s existing Slim Yoga laptops while incorporating advanced solar technology.
Key features include:
- Back-contact solar cells: These improve efficiency by moving conductive gridlines and mounting brackets to the back of the solar panel, ensuring an unobstructed front surface.
- 24% conversion rate: This makes the laptop’s solar panel among the most efficient available today.
- Solar-first energy system: The device automatically prioritizes solar energy for charging when available.
- Dynamic solar tracking system: Constantly measures the panel’s current and voltage to maximize energy savings and maintain stability.

Usability in Various Light Conditions
While the laptop can function indoors using ambient light from a window or artificial lighting, this will provide only limited power. Lenovo states that in such conditions, the energy harvested will sustain battery life in idle mode but may not support active usage.
Positive Reception at Mobile World Congress
The Yoga Solar PC was well received at MWC, with visitors praising its practicality and effectiveness. Lenovo also unveiled other innovative products at the event, including:
- ThinkBook Flip: A concept laptop featuring a flexible display that folds out vertically for an extended screen.
- Solar Power Kit for Yoga: A portable solar panel and power bank that can be attached to a backpack, tent, or tree for off-grid charging.
This launch follows Lenovo’s rollable laptop prototype, showcased earlier this year at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
