8VC, a venture capital firm based in San Francisco, has established a second office in Austin, Texas. Partnering with Michael Hsu Office of Architecture, 8VC has renovated a century-old bungalow by transforming it into a sleek and modern space. This building was used for a range of different purposes throughout the years, such as a brothel in the early 1900s, offices in the 1980s, and an Airbnb property, Camp Congress. When 8VC Partner Jake Medwell toured the property, he saw potential for a design that was both luxurious and inviting, while paying homage to its history. The building, now painted in moody black, is designed to fit in with the bustling South Congress Avenue.
Upon entering, people are welcomed to a transformed outdoor area that is ideal for hosting, as well as a preserved heritage oak canopy which provides shade on sunny days. Inside, Michael Hsu’s design evokes historic charm through furnishings such as herringbone walnut floors, a leather-wrapped reception desk by David Ambrose, and a chandelier by local artist Karen Hawkins. The palette is warm and rich, creating an atmosphere like home. In the era of Covid-19, 8VC emphasizes the importance of the correlation between hospitality and workspaces. As people desire to feel better in their workspaces, 8VC’s Austin office gives visitors the opportunity to do just that.
