Museum of Emotions / Edition #2

Although it may not come to mind right away when you enter a place, architecture has always had a significant effect on feelings. Offices can make you feel energized and productive, art galleries can make you feel contemplative and curious, and museums can make you feel quiet and intrigued. Different locations are designed to evoke different emotions in its occupants. These places are individually very diverse from one another and are much more than just structures.

The Museum of Emotions competition, one in a series of yearly architecture contests, challenges entrants to utilize architecture as a tool to elicit various emotions. They must create a museum with two distinct display halls, one of which should evoke negative emotions, while the other should evoke pleasant emotions.

Participants are allowed to decide the particular feelings, such as fear, wrath, anxiety, love, happiness, or laughter, they want to evoke with their works. Through careful consideration of the sizes of the spaces, the path through the space, color, lighting, and material selection, the Museum of Emotions aims to use architecture as the primary tool to elicit emotional responses.

Participants are free to select any site location, whether it be real or imagined, as well as the scale of their project because this is an ideas competition.

One of Buildners’ silent competitions, Museum of Emotions, requires contestants to convey their ideas without the use of any text. The only means of conveying the design idea and the reasoning behind it must be visual.
