Competition Brief

Intent

The Museum of Emotions / Edition #8 Competition 2026 is a global call for architects, interior and industrial designers to represent emotions through architecture. The defined scenario requires the creation of a museum with two different exhibition spaces: one dedicated to negative emotions and the other to positive ones. The competition points out how the emotional reactions in a building can be controlled and modified by means of space characteristics, materials, illumination, movement, and overall atmosphere.

Purpose

The competition endeavors to demonstrate the expressive power of architecture over and above the conventional functional requirements. It challenges the competitors to conceive of built space as somewhere that could be emotional, i.e. to provoke, heighten, or transform emotional states. Thus architecture gets intenser and deeper interaction with the experiential qualities and communication of these through design becomes the task of the designer/perpetrator.

Requirements

The competition welcomes all individuals, teams or groups from different parts of the world. No professional qualifications are demanded. Participants can take part individually or form teams of up to four members. All design concepts are to be expressed visually only; no text is allowed in the case of drawings, diagrams, renderings, models, or presentation boards. The artists can pick any site, whether real or imaginary, and any scale for their idea that they consider fitting. All the submitted contents must have English translations.

Jury

The jury for Edition #8 has yet to be appointed. The competition organizers will select competencies of architects and related fields’ experts in order to assure an impartial judgment of the works. The names of the jurors and their respective associations will be disclosed at some later time in this edition’s case.

✦ ArchUp Competition Review

The Museum of Emotions / Edition #8 Competition 2026 is an event that has been organized by Buildner Architecture Competitions, famous for recognizing international idea-driven contests with less transparency about this edition’s jury because specific names have not been disclosed yet. The competition is primarily in the realm of ideas rather than in the field of promotions or construction so the overall outcome will be based on the winner’s idea only. Although with a total prize fund of €10,000 the rewards are still comparatively small with respect to the “silent” visual-only submission requirement and the creative demands that are quite wide-ranging. Conceptual architectural participants get to develop portfolios and do emotional architecture research, while professional implementation possibilities are still uncertain. The jury will be formed from experts of architecture and design but the hidden names will lead to lesser clarity about the skills and the measures being used.

Conclusion

The Museum of Emotions / Edition #8 Competition 2026 brings the series once more to the point of emotional and experiential architecture. By announcing that only visuals should be used to communicate design ideas, the brief highly values spatial storytelling and interpretation as compared to textual description. The wide-ranging eligibility and conceptual character of the contest create an environment where the creativity of architects, designers, students, and even the whole team of creatives playing with the building that connects emotions and perceptions is constantly being frustrated.
