The School of Architecture + Art teaches that architecture is about solving problems for people through the composition of light, space and material. It is about embracing the way space can be sculpted to improve how we live.

“Many standards of normalcy have changed considerably over the last year, especially regarding how we gather for teaching and learning,” Associate Director Tolya Stonorov said. “While outdoor learning spaces aren’t an entirely new idea, they need become all the more important in our current situation. With this design competition we are seeking your thoughtful solutions to creating effective, thoughtful, and functional outdoor spaces for learning.”

Norwich University is home to the Design+Build Collaborative. As northern New England’s only university to supply integrated professionally accredited programs in Architecture, Business, Engineering, Construction and Nursing, Norwich’s Design+Build Collaborative calls on students to “act also as conceive” and make solutions for local, regional, and global challenges.

For quite 20 years, Norwich University students are addressing Vermont community needs through the development of full-scale projects. Building on the seven affordable housing prototypes Norwich has developed since 2011, the Collaborative not only continues to style and prototype regionally informed, resilient housing, but also organizes and coordinates related research and programs between the faculties comprising the school of Professional Schools and partners with community organizations. Norwich University announced in February 2019 a $200,000 grant from TD Charitable Foundation, the charitable giving arm of TD Bank, America’s Most Convenient Bank®, to fund the event of a collaborative within the College of Professional Schools dedicated to producing affordable homes.
