Growing concern has been rising around the problem of single-use plastic waste generated by consumer products. Grocery items are usually packed in disposable containers or dispensers, which further worsen this issue.

Orkla, in partnership with Æra and Bakken & Bæck, developed På(fyll) to target plastic waste and create a more eco-friendly and circular future. Form Us With Love, a Swedish design studio, created this digital platform and refillable container for frequently-used household products in order to diminish plastic waste throughout the supply chain. Not only does this endeavor lead to greater sustainability, but it also makes life more convenient for consumers.

The design process behind På(fyll)

In order to create a sustainable and user-focused design, Form Us With Love launched På(fyll) after an extensive endeavor. This design process was faced with the challenge of creating a robust and adaptable container that could contain products from various brands, as well as liquids with different consistencies, all while making sure it was easy to use and store. The inspiration for this container was found in already existing objects. Like jerrycans, stackable blocks, and book spines for a user-friendly design. During the development of the container, key components were added with the intention of reducing spills and allowing easy use. Features of this container include a label with a perforated section to tie up the empty containers together.

This innovation makes it easier for users and transport companies to handle during the return process. The container was designed with grip strength, different age groups, and a balance between strength and lightweight in mind. The requirements for a subscription-based model of household products are much different than traditional containers offered in grocery stores. And the På(fyll) container puts an emphasis on functionality and user-friendliness. With this design, they are dedicated to providing a quality product that meets the customer’s needs. Even if the design doesn’t conform to the conventional expectations.

From the understanding gained to the final resolution

På(fyll) is a revolutionary circular service, developed through an extensive process. That provides refillable containers for use in a variety of home and personal care products. Intuitively designed with durability, stackability, and user-friendliness in mind. På(fyll) enables customers to make conscious choices when it comes to reducing their plastic waste. The comprehensive digital platform simplifies the entire process making it effortless to have refillable containers delivered directly to the doorstep. Additionally, the QR code tracking system provides customers with a heightened transparency and accountability throughout their journey. Above all, På(fyll) facilitates guilt-free consumption, preempting the mass disposal of plastic products into the ocean every minute of every day. Not only that, but the refillable containers are used throughout the years, making the overall shopping experience more cost-efficient and sustainable.

Starting with a beta version

In early 2022, Påfyll initiated a beta version involving 100 households in Norway, with plans for subsequent expansion into a broader market. Ongoing data analysis and insights derived from the transparent backend will steer feature development and guide the strategy for broader rollouts. As the service continues to grow in the Norwegian market throughout 2023, it will steadfastly maintain its sustainability as a central focus, with constant refinements based on the knowledge gained. Furthermore, The success of Påfyll can be attributed to a collaborative effort involving experts from diverse fields. Including market analysis, branding, industrial design, strategy, and engineering.
