MVRDV has unveiled the design of an urban, pink staircase and rooftop theater at the Het Nieuwe Institute in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

Design Features

The project is a new temporary event space, measuring 600 square meters,

that will decorate the rooftop of the Het Nieuwe Institute in Rotterdam.

It will be programmed by a variety of institutions and creators in Rotterdam,

and the project will be called The Platform.

The staircase reaches a height of 29 meters and can be accessed via 143 steps,

a striking pink color was chosen for the project.

This pink increases the visibility of the catwalk,

located next to the MVRDV Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen artwork storage building.

The podium makes use of the rooftop of the institute, previously unavailable to the public,

providing a unique opportunity to experience architecture, the city,

Museumpark and Het Nieuwe Institute from a whole new perspective.

The stage will open on June 1, forming the heart of the Architecture Month Festival in Rotterdam,

and will continue to be used for events until August 17.

While Rotterdam’s rooftops have huge potential, particularly those of the Het Nieuwe Institute,

through the panoramic view from the distinctive pergola, the building designed by Jo Coenen,

inspired the design team to create a 29-meter-high platform.

The platform has an area of 600 square meters and can accommodate a variety of events and meetings.

It offers a view of the city, the Museumpark and the adjacent warehouse,

Boijmans Van Beuningen designed by MVRDV.

The platform will be supported on a scaffolding structure with floor finishes that can be recycled later.

While the platform represents the ambition of the Het Nieuwe Institute, to increase public knowledge about architecture,

it is also a testament to the ambition of MVRDV.

In order to make better use of the rooftops of the city,

an important approach to densification of the city which will allow it to develop sustainably by preventing urban sprawl.

In addition to creating opportunities to add green space and water management which is much needed.

Rotterdam Architecture Month will be the first user of The Podium, with the event starting on June 1, 2022.

Throughout the month, The Podium will be the heart of the festival, hosting lectures, tours,

films and other activities focused on architecture.

In July and August, The Podium will also be open for other activities,

from sports lessons and rooftop dinners, as well as a program specially designed for children.

The studio designed The Stairs, in 2016, with 180 degrees leading to Stationsplein,

outside Rotterdam Central Station.

The gigantic structure was built to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the reconstruction of Rotterdam.

May 26 will see the opening of Rotterdam Rooftop, an initiative of Rotterdam Days Rooftop designed by MVRDV.

This installation will allow free access for a month to a series of adjacent rooftops in the city center that are usually closed to the public.

Allowing visitors to experience how rooftops can contribute to a better future for cities and urban dwellers.

The Rooftop Walk also contains symbolic and didactic objectives,

to show people the potential of roofs and the need to make better use of them.

This fits with Rotterdam’s ambition to give a large area of flat roofs in the city a function:
