Despite its compact 484-square-foot size and dark, damp condition, the team at Desnudo Arquitectura transformed this beach house on Spain’s Mallorca Island into an architectural gem that merges history with contemporary design. The project began with a fascinating discovery: while stripping away layers of the building, the architects uncovered sections of the original 19th- or early 20th-century structure, adding a unique heritage dimension to the renovation.

Uncovering Hidden History

Archival photos revealed that this house was the only one standing in the Cala Llombards area in 1956, lending historical significance to the project. The team preserved the original stone walls while integrating smart interior design that relies on built-in furniture to maximize space.

The Challenge: Turning Darkness into Light

The biggest hurdle was improving ventilation and lighting in such a tight space. The solution included:

  • Opening up the interior to create a unified space with multifunctional zones.
  • Custom-designed furniture, such as the central curved table, crafted from the home’s recycled materials.
  • Placing utilities (like the bathroom and kitchen) along the perimeter to keep the center open and flooded with natural light.

Interior Design: Intelligence in Every Detail

The studio meticulously designed every piece of furniture, including:

  • Built-in beds and side tables.
  • Wardrobes and shelving seamlessly integrated into the walls.
  • A low living room table made from the house’s original stone, placed on a transparent glass base to highlight the structure’s material heritage.

The Result: Harmony Between Function and Beauty

The home became a model of spatial efficiency, with every square inch utilized intelligently without sacrificing aesthetics. The architects explain:

“A unified design with remarkable fluidity reflects not just architectural ingenuity but also the human connection with the client, who believed in our bold vision.”

✦ ArchUp Editorial Insight

This project demonstrates how intelligent design can turn a neglected, small space into a place that honors historical identity while meeting modern needs. However, it could have delved deeper into structural challenges, such as moisture control or time constraints. Nevertheless, the achievement remains inspiring—particularly in its use of local materials and the storytelling embedded in the old walls—proving that great architecture begins by listening to the space itself.
