Roofs, roof types and maintenance guide

Types of roofs

In addition to the different materials to choose from, roofs can take different shapes, and the primary choice for any extension or new construction project will be between a pitched or flat roof.

pitched roof

Pitched roofs are what many consider to be traditional roofs, sloping downward from a high point. There are many different styles of pitched roof, such as:
Gable: Two slanted sides of equal size.
Hip: four oblique sides, two large and two small.
Pyramidal hip: four oblique sides of equal size.
Salt box: two sloping sides, one short and steep, the other long and gentle.
M-shape: Exactly what it looks like, two peaks in a recessed middle.
The slope of the pitched roof allows for natural drainage, a factor that needs more careful consideration when dealing with a flat roof.
However, the gradation of pitched roofs also needs to be considered, as steeper slopes are more technically challenging, require more specialized knowledge and therefore more expensive service.

flat roof

Flat roofs are an increasingly popular choice for roofing, especially for home extensions and extensions.
Because they are less complex than pitched roofs, they can often be built more cheaply and faster.
They also allow for skylights, which are a very popular addition in home extensions that welcome mounds of natural light into the space.

maintenance

Most areas of the home need general maintenance to extend its useful life, but surfaces are much better at hiding their problems.
Not only that, but the effects of unresolved roof problems can be a huge problem and costly to fix, so you must perform these tasks to ensure the security of your roof.

Check your roof

Unfortunately, roofs rarely get the attention they deserve, and it can be easy to go years without looking at shingles, especially when they’re not needed.
But warning signs of roof damage will never appear without looking, so it’s a good idea to check for them at least once a year.

Remove the moose

Moss is roof enemy number one. Not only does it retain water, which will ruin most building materials over time, but it can germinate under and between shingles.

By growing between cracks, algae can lift, move and even completely dislodge shingles creating space for leaks.
When removing algae, we always recommend hiring a professional,
as roofs are places where you cannot afford to wreak havoc on your own.

Unclog the gutters

Gutters can easily get filled with debris and grime. Over time,
if water is not drained properly, it can build up and cause major problems.
This is especially important when draining water on flat roofs,
where accumulated water can remain for long periods and cause serious damage.

Cut back nearby branches

If your roof is covered in trees in any way, pruning the trees back can be a great way to avoid future problems.
Not only will overgrown branches fall leaves and small twigs into your gutters,
Even a severed branch in a storm can cause an expensive mess.

Insulate your roof properly

Effective roof insulation is difficult to get right, as the roof must prevent heat from escaping.
But if it is not properly ventilated, it may cause moisture to collect in condensation.
This suspended moisture can rot and weaken your roof from the inside, which becomes a real problem.
Monitor your home’s insulation and ventilation regularly to avoid these costly repairs.
