Japanese studios Td-Atelier and Endo Shorijo Design have seamlessly merged traditional residential elements with modern geometric interventions to transform a historic townhouse in Kyoto into Kawamichiya Kosho-An, a charming noodle restaurant. Situated in the Nakagyo Ward, this culinary gem is an extension of the renowned soba restaurant Kawamichiya, boasting a culinary legacy spanning over three centuries.

Time-Honored Setting: Preservation and Adaptation

Occupying a 110-year-old property, Kawamichiya Kosho-An retains quintessential features of traditional Japanese architecture, including a lattice-screened facade and a tokonoma alcove. Architect Masaharu Tada and designer Shorijo Endo embarked on a collaborative journey to restore and adapt the townhouse’s original elements, breathing new life into its historic framework.

Revival of Lost Designs: Honoring the Past

The restoration process aimed to resurrect hidden or lost design elements, preserving the townhouse’s elaborate features. While infusing them with contemporary geometry. Tada and Endo’s meticulous approach revitalized the building’s essence, paying homage to its rich heritage.

Spatial Harmony: Delightful Dining Experiences

Kawamichiya Kosho-An offers a multifaceted dining experience, where changes in floor height and the use of different materials delineate distinct areas within the Soba restaurant. From traditional Japanese parlors adorned with floor cushions to porch-like spaces and intimate dining nooks, guests are treated to a symphony of textures and atmospheres.

Culinary Theatre: Kitchen Centrality

The restaurant’s central kitchen, slightly recessed from the surrounding floors, serves as a focal point. Thus, allowing staff to interact with diners while maintaining a clear line of sight. This thoughtful design element adds dynamism to the dining experience, seamlessly blending tradition with modern functionality.

Architectural Resonance: Preserving Character

Preserving the townhouse’s character, Kawamichiya Kosho-An features original architectural elements such as curved wooden ceilings and traditional alcoves. These cherished details, coupled with adapted wooden doors and shoji screens, evoke a sense of authenticity and timelessness.

Collaborative Legacy: Td-Atelier and Endo Shorijo Design

Masaharu Tada and Shorijo Endo, both esteemed architects, bring their collective expertise to Kawamichiya Kosho-An. Therefore, embodying a harmonious fusion of tradition and innovation. Their collaborative efforts breathe new life into historic spaces, ensuring they continue to enchant and inspire generations to come.
