The Home of Shadows competition of Edition 4 takes world architects and designers on a journey to look at residential living through a very strict lens: artificial light is not allowed at all in the house. Participants that thus have to work with natural light and shadow only, have to make the space feel comfortable and livable according to the households daily activities light and shadow play. The challenge asks designers to consider very carefully how daylight in terms of direction, intensity and changing seasons can in turn define architecture mood, comfort and logical arrangement of spaces.

This competition is basically investigating the crucial roles light and shadow play in architecture. It gives the participants a task to create the most suitable home for a nonexistent couple that has access to all modern amenities but that is designed exclusively for using daylight. The house then turns into a theatre of light and shadow where the windows, openings, direction and material must enact the life cycles without the aid of artificial lighting.

Competition Overview

Designers can pick any imaginary plot for their dream house. The final product should be a fully operational house comprising of a bedroom, living room, kitchen, bathroom and more. The project encourages creativity and does not limit the choice of building type or style. The only absolute must is that the use of natural light and shadow as the main design elements must be very evident throughout the proposal. The competition is open to single participants or teams of up to four people and no professional licensing is required.

Design Expectations

The designs will be measured in terms of how effectively they can naturally use and display light and shadow in different areas of the house and the daily activities of the people living there, without help from artificial lighting. Different aspects of a design should be considered like the direction of the sun, the size of the openings, the materials used, the shading methods, the penetration of daylight, comfort, privacy, and the flow of spaces. Proposals should consider the climate factors such as the sun’s path and seasonal changes.

The competition appreciates the factors like creativity, excellent technical skills, sensitivity to light, ecological thinking, and atmospheric design. The house has to be realistic, functional, and inhabitable and at the same time, convey a strong conceptual narrative which is entirely based upon natural light and shadow.

Why This Competition Matters

The Home of Shadows Edition 4 is a complete challenge to the overreliance on artificial light in today’s architecture. It brings designers back to the basic tools of the building like orientation, daylight pattern and materiality, and passive environmental control. In an epoch when energy consumption and climate change are major concerns, designing a house that operates solely on natural light is an indispensable exercise in sustainability and environmental responsibility.

Through this competition architects are challenged to reconsider the natural cycles in terms of space, comfort and atmosphere. It produces solutions from the interaction of light and architecture that are beneficial for people and, at the same time, require less energy and are more timeless.

✦ ArchUp Competition Review

The Home of Shadows Edition 4 competition is a very transparent and well-structured challenge for designers to use only natural light and nothing else for the domestic architecture. The brief is imaginative but at the same time very accurate and invites strong conceptual thinking which is being backed by the technical know-how. The jury favors the characteristics of being creative, being environmentally friendly, and being able to produce spaces that are functional and emotionally rich at the same time without the use of artificial light. The requirements are very clearly stated and they are open not only to students but also to professionals thereby increasing accessibility. This competition is very appropriate for designers who want to deal with sustainability, atmospheric design, and also want to find out the ways in which light and shadow can direct the experience of life in daily terms.

Conclusion

The Home of Shadows Edition 4 presents an opportunity to come back to the roots of architecture, which is nature instead of technology. It invites the designers to come up with the daylight’s playing by fun, shadowy atmospheres, and small, pleasant, and smartly situated homes. For architectural professionals who are working within the boundaries of conceptual sustainable and poetic design, this competition gives a very useful platform to bring forth ideas that can change things substantially.
