The National Folk Museum of Korea, currently located within Gyeongbokgung Palace, is set to relocate as part of the Gyeongbokgung Palace restoration project, with the move planned for completion by 2030. This design competition seeks innovative proposals for the museum’s new site in the National Museum Complex in Sejong City.

Competition Objective

The objective of this competition is to select a design that will effectively integrate the new National Folk Museum of Korea into the National Museum Complex, while preserving and enhancing its role in showcasing the country’s rich cultural heritage. The new location will provide an opportunity to reimagine the museum’s layout, visitor experience, and its integration with the surrounding architectural landscape.

Site and Project Details

The new museum site is situated in Zone 2 of the National Museum Complex in Sejong City, with a total site area of 50,815 square meters and a gross floor area of 23,473 square meters. The design must adhere to a building coverage ratio of 50% and a floor area ratio of 200%. The estimated construction cost for the project is 78.76 billion KRW, excluding electrical and exhibition costs but including VAT. The estimated design cost is 5.138 billion KRW, covering all necessary aspects such as basic and detailed design, certification fees, and model production.

Competition Timeline

Applications for the design competition will be accepted from September 23 to October 4, 2024. This open call invites architects and designers from various backgrounds to submit their innovative design concepts for this culturally significant project.
