Urban Roofscape Activation 2026
Competition Brief
The Urban Roofscape Activation competition investigates how modern cities can use rooftop space which remains unutilized. As urban density increases and ground-level open spaces decrease, rooftops are seen as opportunities to create public spaces and social areas and make ecological spaces which extend above the city limits.
The competition invites architects and designers and urban thinkers to create rooftop spaces which serve as active and inclusive and valuable spaces which extend urban life through their social and ecological functions.
Intent
The project aims to develop design solutions which will transform urban rooftop spaces into active public areas while creating new functions for these spaces throughout the city. The project requires developers to create flexible and expandable and location-based solutions which will improve environmental protection and community participation and city development.
Purpose
The purpose is to challenge conventional thinking about rooftops, transforming them into functional spaces for community gatherings, urban farming, cultural or recreational activities, wellness zones, and climate-responsive installations. The design should show how it connects with the nearby urban areas.
Requirements
- Participants have the freedom to suggest multiple functions or to invent new roles for them.
- The rooftop site is open and participant-defined (residential, commercial, institutional, or industrial) in any city worldwide.
- Participants have the option to submit their entries either as individuals or as part of a team which can have one to four members.
- All written materials and presentation content must be submitted in English.
Jury
The jury consists of experienced architects, designers, educators, and industry professionals. The evaluation criteria for the project include five specific elements which are concept clarity, roofscape activation, urban impact, sustainability, and design quality. The jury’s decision is final and binding.
- Conceptual Clarity & Innovation
- Roofscape Activation & Programmatic Integration
- Contextual Response & Urban Impact
- Sustainability & Environmental Strategies
- Design Quality & Visual Communication

✦ ArchUp Competition Review
The Urban Roofscape Activation 2026 competition invites architects and designers from all over the world to create rooftop spaces that function as social and cultural and ecological extensions of urban areas. The jury consists of experienced professionals who provide reasonable expertise but their individual identities remain unknown to the public. The competition requires professionals to participate through a conceptual framework which requires less registration fees than their expected work. The awards provide recognition and publication opportunities to participants who want to increase their professional standing through portfolio development but they do not provide financial rewards. The primary advantage for participants lies in their development of cutting-edge proposals and their research into urban design methods while the competition evaluates their ability to build practical solutions through its design assessment which offers educational and artistic value.
Conclusion and Critical Thoughts
Urban rooftops remain hidden from public view yet they possess the capacity to enhance city life. The competition requires designers to develop public spaces that function as active areas which people with different abilities can use throughout the entire urban space.
The creative requirements of the project allow for artistic expression but they create difficulties which designers must solve through their building design and path accessibility and their need to connect various functions. Successful proposals will be those that balance imaginative design with real-world applicability and urban context.
The project demonstrates how rooftops function as essential components of modern city life through its examination of their social and ecological and cultural aspects.
