Vastudio’s Threshold: A Serene Stone & Pool Residence in Crete Weaves Past with Present
Nestled within a village defined by olive groves, terraces, and dry-stone walls in Bazinos, near Chania, Vastudio’s Threshold is a residential complex that amplifies the inherent qualities of its existing structure. The Athenian architects have transformed the site into a contemplative sanctuary where daily life is immersed in memory, framed by stone walls, vaulted ceilings, and a profound interaction with Mediterranean light.
The renovated complex is organized into three interconnected volumes, each anchored by a mirror-like swimming pool. These pools are not just features but central organizing elements, designed to guide circulation as a series of meditative thresholds. They frame views of the olive groves, reflect the vast Cretan sky, and mark the passage of time throughout the day.

A Dialogue of Materials and Light
The project’s strength lies in its materiality, which seamlessly connects the building to its landscape. Locally sourced stone, timber, lime plaster, and carefully placed skylights activate the surfaces. The preserved vaulted ceilings act as spatial instruments; their curved geometry shapes sunlight and acoustics, simultaneously recalling the history of the original building while serving a modern, minimalist aesthetic.

A Sustainable and Thoughtful Renovation
The architects at Vastudio prioritized a respectful and eco-conscious approach. Existing stonework, wood beams, and original materials were meticulously restored and reused wherever possible. Modern systems were integrated discreetly, ensuring contemporary comfort without compromising the historical integrity and environmental continuity of the structure. The result is a home that accommodates modern life while preserving the authentic soul of its Cretan architecture.

Through pathways, level changes, and framed vistas, movement through the Threshold becomes a reflective experience. It is a journey where light, shadow, stone, and water converge to create a profoundly peaceful and timeless residence.
