Twenty-four projects that use wood were recognized this week as part of the WoodWorks 2023 Wood Design Awards. Each year the program celebrates buildings in a range of sectors from residential to institutional making strides when it comes to the use of wood.
“Investing in a more sustainable future deserves to be recognized. It’s an honor to celebrate design teams that inspire the broader AEC community by challenging the expectations of modern design and construction. This year’s winning projects represent the work of building designers from across the nation who are demonstrating the incredible potential of wood,” said WoodWorks President and CEO, Jennifer Cover in a statement. “From 19 stories of CLT and glulam towering over the Milwaukee skyline to wooden reflectors enhancing acoustics in a Colorado theater, these projects underscore how wood enriches the physical landscape of our communities and the experience of those who inhabit them.”
This year’s project submissions were judged by a panel made up of Corey Martin of Hacker Architects in Oregon; Cheung Chan from Neumann Monson Architects in Iowa; and Lauren Wingo, a senior structural engineer at Arup’s Washington, D.C., office.
Architects, designers, and engineers submitted projects to ten national categories, including commercial mid-rise, commercial low-rise, schools, multifamily, government buildings, institutional, and sustainable, as well as other more thematic and subjective categories such as Sustainability, Beauty of Wood, Durable and Adaptable Wood Structures, and Innovation. Another set of projects were recognized as Regional Excellence Winners.
Among the project’s awarded in the 2023 iteration are Ascent, the world’s tallest timber building; Nanotronics Smart Factory in Brooklyn, New York; Wellesley College Science Complex by SOM; and the Houston Endowment by Kevin Daly Architects and PRODUCTORA.
