The World of Transport competition has opened the floodgates for architects and designers to document their imagination through a conceptual design of a new visitor attraction in Ostrava that will spread over more than forty thousand square metres. The goal is to build a multifunctional space which will embrace the areas of transport history, technology and visitor experience in an immersive way.

Ostrava city intends the competition to culminate in ideas which will show historical exhibits alongside incorporating modern technologies and making up engaging narratives. Designers are to consider how a vast area can be made into a site that symbolizes movement, innovation, and the past.

Competition Overview

The brief suggests a guiding central idea which will link the new structures to the existing historic railway station building. The design should comprise outdoor exhibition areas, themed zones, temporary and permanent exhibition spaces, and visitor pathways. The places of innovation are narratives, interactivity and visitor flow, which are key.

The competition is open to contestants from all parts of the world. Participants are to submit their conceptual design proposals that let their imagination run wild, while at the same time being feasible, sustainable, and capable of addressing context and future use. The selected concept will be the cornerstone around which the new attraction in Ostrava will be built and thus, it will be of great importance.

Architectural Analysis

The core of the competition’s design logic lies in the fact that the movement and transport have been transformed into spatial experience. The participants shall picture how the trains’ flow, historical vehicles, and interactive exhibits can be turned into buildings. The movement of the visitors will be an exhibit itself.

The choice of materials and the structural logic should be a tribute to both the past and the future. The designers, for instance, might take industrial materials linked to transport like steel, glass, and concrete plus exposed infrastructure, but in the same breath, they should also incorporate environmentally friendly and immersive systems that are ideal for a visitor attraction.

The setting of Ostrava with its industrial transport heritage, and the old railway station is a great source of cultural and architectural richness. Besides, the design must allow the existing context to be respected, the indoor and outdoor exhibition areas to be connected and the impact of large-scale architecture telling the story of movement, machines, and people to be responded to.

Competition Importance

The contest is a lesson of narrative and movement in architecture, not a simple form. It stresses the importance of large-scale public buildings with high visibility that unite heritage, technology, and visitor experience.

Exploration of museum, transport, and public exhibition architecture in a hybrid way contributes to architectural thinking. This competition is very relevant at the moment when cities are re-evaluating public spaces, industrial heritage, and cultural tourism.

✦ ArchUp Competition Review

The World of Transport Competition has opened the door for submitting conceptual proposals for a visitor attraction in Ostrava, integrating historical and contemporary transport elements over a 40,000-square-metre area, to international architects and designers. The competition is open to all, and it has only one submission deadline, 10th December 2025, which also gives a chance to be part of a major public architecture project. The design rationale highlights narrative, visitors’ movement, and heritage integration, and the choice of materials is in support of the industrial character and sustainability. The competition is a mix of academic and professional interests, giving the participants creative freedom, but at the same time making them responsible for the context, and offering a structured platform for the innovative large-scale public architecture concepts that will fuse culture, technology, and experiential design.

Conclusion

The World of Transport contest is a great opportunity for creatives to be involved in a public architecture challenge that is major to say the least. It opens up the space for artistry that combines the past, modernity, users’s experiences and large-scale aspirations.

The designers are asked to present concepts that are sensory, attentive to the site and looking towards the future. The artists in this competition will use their creativity to tell stories, allow people to move and interact with the architecture.
