Aluminum: The Common Link Between Two Global Brands
Aluminum is a material that unites two prominent brands in their respective fields: Rimowa, the German icon in the world of luggage. Vitra is the Swiss giant in modern furniture design. Despite their different domains, their shared passion for this lightweight and durable material brings them together.
Aluminum in Luggage and Furniture Design
For Rimowa, aluminum serves as the core element in their two famous collections, Original and Classic. It is used to craft suitcase frames that enhance both durability and lightness. On the other hand, Vitra has relied on aluminum early on in designing its flagship pieces. Notably, the Eames Aluminium chair collection is known for its geometric precision and understated elegance.
Collaboration Between Rimowa and Vitra: A Design That Bridges Art and Engineering
In a unique move, the two brands joined forces to present a limited edition. This edition embodies their shared passion for aluminum. It includes a versatile chair and a portable toolbox, both crafted from Rimowa’s signature grooved aluminum. These pieces stand out not only in terms of design but also represent the intersection of engineering and artistic design in furniture and luggage manufacturing.
Limited Edition Chair: A Design That Combines Functionality and Innovation
The chair was launched as a limited edition, restricted to only 1000 pieces. Christian Grossen, Creative Director of Design at Vitra, describes it as a “hybrid form that merges elements of luggage and furniture design.” This description highlights the unique harmony between the durability of aluminum and practical design details.
Design and Practical Features
The chair takes the shape of an aluminum storage cube, equipped with a sleek, detachable seat cushion. It also features Rimowa’s renowned multi-wheel system, allowing for easy and smooth movement across various spaces.
Interior Space and Smart Organization
When the cube is opened, the design reveals a luxurious padded interior made with Vitra fabric. It is complemented by removable leather dividers. These dividers enable an organized and elegant way to store everyday items, making the chair ideal for daily storage needs.
Idea Development and Versatile Uses
The initial goal was to design a small office chair that could store a laptop, papers, and pens. However, its harmonious proportions and its shape resembling a small domestic robot have expanded its use. This chair has become multifunctional, suitable for placement in living rooms, bedrooms, and even bathrooms.

Toolbox: A Reimagining of Authenticity with a Modern Touch
The toolbox was produced in a very limited edition, not exceeding 100 pieces. It was inspired by the original Toolbox designed by Arik Levy in 2010. While the original version was made from recycled plastic, the new edition reimagines the box using ribbed aluminum. This gives it greater durability and a more luxurious feel.
Materials and Precise Local Manufacturing
All aluminum parts are manufactured at Rimowa’s headquarters in Cologne. Meanwhile, the padded interior parts made of recycled fabric are crafted at Vitra’s campus in Weil am Rhein. This collaboration reflects both brands’ commitment to high quality and craftsmanship.
Collaboration Between Two Complementary Brands
Christian Grossen explains that this partnership felt natural due to the shared values between the two companies. These shared values are exceptional design, quality, and durability. He added that both the “Aluminum Chair” and the “Aluminum Toolbox” embody the heritage of the brands. Rimowa represents the spirit of travel, while Vitra embodies the concept of mobile living and working.
