Applications and types of tiles used in construction

Applications and types of tiles used in construction,

Tiles are used in building construction, which are thin panels or elements used to cover surfaces

such as floors and walls.

The types of tiles and their applications are discussed,

as tiles in the present era are an essential element in bringing the finishes and beauty of the interior and exterior of the building.

The tiles are mainly made of clay or any form of inorganic raw material,

nowadays tiles are also made from recycled materials, making it an eco-friendly item.

The shape of the tiles can be obtained through various processes

such as extrusion or pressing at room temperature or any other method, where it is left to dry after forming.

By exposing these dried items to fire, this stage of firing aims to ensure that they obtain the desired properties,

which are meant to be obtained when on the market and in construction applications.

There are different types of tiles used in the construction of buildings,

they may be in the form of glass or unglazed, they are non-combustible in nature,

and the tiles are not affected under light.

Classification of tile types based on application

There are several different types of tiles used in building construction,

and these are unique to the type of surface they must be applied to.

Below are the types of tiles depending on the surface on which they will be applied

  • roofing tiles

It is made of ceramics, which are products made in dedicated kilns,

as their manufacture is similar to the manufacture of bricks.

  • Floor tiles

It is used indoors as well as outside of a building, based on requirements for decoration or aesthetics.

  • Wall tiles

Like the floor tiles as it is mainly applied inside or outside the building,

it belongs to the ceramic class and is called white goods.

Wall and floor tiles are available in both glazed and unglazed forms,

and wall tiles are often glazed with a thin layer of glaze when available in the market.

Floor tiles are designed largely for aesthetics and movement, but are subject to higher loading,

stress and other undesirable physical actions.

Therefore, this tile is made more durable, wear-resistant, waterproof and easy to clean.

The floor tiles along with the mentioned properties should also provide good aesthetics, and the degree of combustion is the property that distinguishes the wall from the floor tiles.

When compared to floor tiles, wall tiles are fired at a low temperature, and then vitrified and re-ignited at a lower temperature

Classification of tile types based on material and workmanship

  • Ceramic tile

It is made from a mixture of clay and other materials, and they are all fired in a kiln.

Ceramic tiles are used for indoor floors, swimming pools,

outdoor floors and walls and for special installation in both indoor and outdoor situations.

Most types of tiles fall under the category of ceramic tiles.

The different types of unglazed and glazed ceramic tiles are given below:

  1. Ceramic tiles
  2. Clay and porcelain
  3. Fully glazed tiles
  4. Glazed tiles
  5. Stone tiles

Whereas, ceramic tiles are made of clay, while stone tiles contain a large amount of silica,

which is found in sand.

Crushed stone is also added to stone tiles to prevent shrinkage when installed.

Terracotta tiles are manufactured using high quality clay.

And we get faience when clay is heated twice, unlike in the case of terracotta tiles.

Where the porcelain is initially exposed to fire, that is clay in the beginning,

and after the terracotta tiles are glazed, it is fired again, finally giving us faience.

As for porcelain, it is available in a large variety of changing colors,

and this helps to improve the clay work.

Glossy Glazed Ceramic Tile

Glazed and glazed glazed tile ceramics are being developed nowadays, as glazed tiles were only used for walls in the initial stages.

And the glazed ceramic tile is mainly manufactured by two processes.

  • Step 1: With the help of special white clay which is fired at a temperature of 1200°C, then the tile structure is made. These final elements are called chips.
  • The second step: the chips accompanied by the glaze and decoration, if any, are placed in the oven.

Ceramic tiles can be glazed using two types:

  • Glazed Porcelain
  • Colored enamel

Colored enamels are also of different types.

  • Glossy and shiny surface
  • Eggshells and parchment
  • Matt finishes

Glazing techniques can be improved for different floor types and different wear and tear due to traffic.
