In the Monastiraki district, at the foot of the ancient Acropolis hill, a new architectural project emerges that reflects a blend of history and modernity.
This space, named Melas Martinos, is the result of a reimagining of an existing building with a rich heritage. It was designed to preserve the historic character of the area and the original structure of the building, while being renovated to meet the demands of contemporary art in the 21st century.
This step comes as part of an effort to maintain the urban identity of old neighborhoods while updating their functions to suit modern needs.

History of the Building and Its Former Function

The building, which has now become a contemporary art gallery, was originally an old shop spanning three floors dedicated to storage and secondary spaces on the upper levels.
Its structure was sturdy and strong, but it was previously inaccessible to the public, as these areas were reserved for private use.
Notably, the building remained in the ownership of the client’s family for over a hundred years, during which they operated an antiques business, adding a layer of deep cultural and historical memory to the place.

Balancing Memory and Function in Design

Since its establishment in 2022 by architect Sofia Xanthakou, the Local Local studio has aimed to integrate the building’s historical memory with the contemporary functions required by a modern art space.
The interior spaces were carefully rehabilitated, cleaned, and adapted to host contemporary art exhibitions, while preserving designated areas for displaying antiques and vintage furniture.
This balance reflects a deep understanding of the importance of evoking the past within a contemporary framework that allows for multifunctional use.

Urban and Historical Context of the Building

The building, which dates back to the early twentieth century, is situated in the heart of Athens’ dense urban fabric, where the neighborhood is teeming with life and diverse structures.
This location is surrounded by several significant archaeological and historical sites, including the Roman Agora, Hadrian’s Library, and two former Ottoman mosques, placing the building within a rich urban context full of history and cultural diversity.

One of the most notable additions is the series of arches on the first floor, added in the 1960s by the Greek modernist architect Takis Zenetos, reflecting the influence of modern architectural movements on the building’s historic fabric.

Preserving Architectural Identity and Adapting Spaces

The architects paid close attention to this sensitive and densely layered architectural fabric, striving to preserve the building’s authentic features by cleaning and refining its identity.
At the same time, they focused on adapting the interior spaces to meet the requirements of a modern art gallery that combines authenticity with contemporary functionality.
This included a complete redesign of the upper floor to incorporate a new balcony with a red terrazzo floor, offering views of the surrounding urban environment and adding a new dimension to the visitor’s experience.

Traditional Craftsmanship and Its Role in Preserving Identity

The selection of craftsmen involved in the restoration process was based on a high level of expertise and skill, as they played a crucial role in reviving the building’s historic details.
Moreover, these craftsmen created new elements that harmonize with the original spirit of the place, including terrazzo floors combining white stones and red pigment in the balconies.
This work was executed by Nikos, one of the few craftsmen who still employ traditional techniques in this field, thereby enhancing the authenticity of the project and ensuring the continuity of traditional craftsmanship in the building’s design.
