Introduction:
A new era begins for Athens International Airport as the Anemos consortium, featuring Grimshaw, Haptic, and K-Studio, unveils a transformative expansion plan. The phased project will increase passenger capacity from 26 to 40 million by 2032, balancing functional upgrades with a design rooted in Athens’ cultural and architectural heritage. This marks a major milestone in Athens airport expansion efforts.

A Design that Expands and Enhances
Situated 20 km from Athens’ center, the airport opened in 2001 ahead of the 2004 Olympics. The redesign integrates extensions of the main and satellite terminals with upgrades to landside and airside infrastructure, retail zones, and passenger services — not replacing the existing, but enriching it. This redesign is a critical part of the planned expansion for Athens airport.

Infusing Athenian Spirit
Natural materials, landscape integration, and ample daylight define the design’s commitment to local character. The airport becomes a reflection of the city’s layered history — a place of movement and memory fused with international efficiency, further emphasizing the importance of the Athens airport expansion project.
Sustainability at the Core
The architecture aims to meet LEED Gold standards and support net-zero carbon goals. Passive design, low-carbon materials, modular methods, and energy-efficient systems make environmental performance integral to the airport’s DNA. All these elements are vital to achieving the goals set for the Athens airport expansion.

A New Western Façade & Civic-Scale Interiors
The western façade introduces rhythmic stone fins and six sculptural portals, creating a grand sense of entry. Inside, two oculus spaces bring civic scale and serenity — one featuring a lush 24.5m-high Mediterranean garden, the other a terraced dining area lit from above. These features showcase the ambitious scope of the Athens airport expansion.
