Charges Filed After Bangkok Office Tower Collapse Claims 95 Lives
Lead: A 32-storey office tower under construction in Bangkok collapsed in March 2025, killing at least 95 people, most of them construction workers. Authorities have now charged the head of one of Thailand’s largest construction firms, along with 22 other individuals, in connection with the tragedy.
Project Background
The tower was being built for Thailand’s State Audit Office by a joint venture between Italian-Thai Development (ITD) and China Railway Number 10 (Thailand) Ltd. It was the only building in Bangkok to collapse during a 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck neighboring Myanmar on 28 March.
Investigation and Charges
Premchai Karnasuta, ITD president and an executive at China Railway Number 10, faces charges of breaching construction regulations and causing death through negligence. Other suspects are accused of forging engineering documents.
Preliminary findings point to flaws in both design and construction as the primary causes of the collapse. Authorities are also investigating possible collusion in the project’s bidding process, which could involve as many as 70 state officials. Those arrested in May, including Premchai, have denied all allegations.
