The Culture Shift project is located in Dongguan, China, a city characterized by rapid urban transformation and situated at the heart of the Greater Bay Area. The project reflects the city’s ambitions to develop integrated urban environments that combine culture, work, and community, going beyond the traditional concept of unified civic civic centers.

Overall Design and Urban Planning

The project is conceived as a “terraced landscape for culture, work, and community,” integrating the municipal building, cultural center, theater, community spaces, and offices into a cohesive and interconnected ensemble. Instead of a single large complex, the design features a series of ascending terraces that mimic the surrounding mountains, providing a balance between urban character and bold architectural expression.

Central Plaza and the Project’s Social Role

Three main buildings frame a spacious central plaza, serving as a quiet “living room” open to nature. This plaza provides a social heart where the local community can interact, enhancing the project’s role not merely as an administrative space, but as a hub for communal and cultural life.

The Western Building: The Cultural Core of Urban Development

The western building forms the heart of cultural activity within the project, concentrating public engagement in a clearly defined manner. This building houses the municipal offices, community spaces, retail outlets, and the theater, all arranged in an interwoven layout that creates a dynamic architectural composition. Each horizontal shift in the building reflects a different program and forms exterior terraces dedicated to gatherings, enhancing social interaction and providing spaces for informal encounters.

Movement and Light Experience Inside the Building

Inside the building, a tall atrium with stepped staircases connects all floors, filled with natural daylight and continuous movement. This design not only adds visual appeal but also enhances the spatial experience, providing a sense of openness and connectivity between different levels. The building thus becomes more than mere functional spaces, it offers an integrated architectural experience that aligns with current research on user interaction and spatial behavior.

Building Façade: Balancing Openness and Privacy

The building’s façade design reflects how architectural diversity can be transformed into a cohesive entity. Vertical frames, articulated horizontal panels, and transparent glazing respond to the building’s varied internal programs, creating a delicate balance between openness and privacy.

Façade Layers and Their Functions

• Transparent Ground Floor: Invites the public in and establishes direct engagement with daily activities inside the building.
• Floating Middle Section: Clad in frosted glass, it accommodates community spaces, providing an environment that blends privacy with social openness.
• Upper Section: Houses the theater and public lobby, featuring partially fritted glass panels that control light while adding a contemporary visual dimension.

Materials and Finishes: A Human Touch

Warm wooden finishes on the terraces and soffits add a tangible, human quality to the structure, making the façade not just a visual envelope but a complete sensory experience that reflects the relationship between the building and its users. These finishes relate closely to the thoughtful use of building materials and detailed material datasheets that guide the project’s refined tactile expression.

Office Buildings: Integration of Design and Functional Adaptability

To the south and east, two office buildings extend, complementing the architectural language of the project and taking advantage of the terraces and interlocking volumes that characterize the western building ensemble.

Designing for Future Flexibility

From the earliest design stages, Superimpose Architecture worked closely with the client to ensure that the architectural expression aligned with a flexible leasing strategy adaptable for the future. This early collaboration resulted in two office buildings that can each be vertically divided to accommodate independent tenants, with dedicated entrances and lobbies for each unit, reflecting a high level of operational flexibility.

Merging Functionality with Aesthetics

This approach not only maximizes the project’s commercial potential but also demonstrates a precise architectural understanding of the client’s needs and the evolving requirements of the workplace. By balancing functionality and aesthetics, the project provides a clear example of how office buildings can be designed to adapt to future changes without losing the architectural identity of the space.

Natural Lighting and Thermal Comfort

Introducing natural light is a fundamental element in the design of The Culture Shift. Thanks to vertical voids and transparent circulation zones, daylight penetrates deep into the building, creating bright, healthy, and welcoming environments. The white aluminum façades equipped with slender vertical fins filter sunlight, ensuring thermal comfort even in a subtropical climate.

Human-Centered Buildings and Sustainability

These buildings demonstrate how thoughtful architectural design can meet client ambitions while creating adaptable, efficient, and human-centered workplaces for a new generation of professionals. The project also reflects a shift in architectural thinking about how cities should be served: in the post-COVID era, public buildings must be flexible, multifunctional, and socially inclusive.
