Building Design and Layout

Located within the Porta Romana railway yard, the village consists of six newly constructed residential buildings alongside the renovation of two historic structures that were once part of the site’s workshops and industrial heritage. This blend of new and restored buildings creates a dialogue between modernity and tradition, preserving the identity of the area.

Architectural Vision

The design emphasizes both the temporary function of the village during the Games and the long-term use of the buildings and open spaces after the event concludes. The project integrates seamlessly into the urban fabric, achieving a balance between practical functionality and architectural cohesion.

✦ ArchUp Editorial Insight

This review of Milan’s Olympic Athletes’ Village offers an architectural perspective on spatial organization and urban integration. The images show new residential blocks next to restored historic structures. They highlight contrasts between modern materials and heritage textures within landscaped courtyards. While the design intention is clear, questions remain about how circulation and open spaces enhance daily user experience. It is also unclear whether communal areas sufficiently support post-Games community engagement. Nevertheless, the project demonstrates how temporary infrastructure can create lasting urban value. It shows the potential for harmonizing heritage and contemporary architecture within a cohesive urban framework.
