Competition Brief

The 2026 Concrete Masonry Competition is an event that invites architecture students to present their designs for a future Welcome Center which will be entirely composed of concrete masonry. The competition envisions the roadside rest stop not just as a site for resting but also as a civic and social symbol that benefits the travelers and that is aware of its larger social context.

Intent

The competition’s main intent is to bring the practice of concrete masonry to the maximum possible height of success and to gain its full acceptance as the main material, not only for the structure but also for the aesthetics. The participants are granted the opportunity to explore the potential of masonry with respect to its durability, identity, and architectural character of public buildings.

Purpose

The competition aims to produce ideas that are both functional and visually appealing. The design submitted must take into account information services, food and rest areas, recreation, safety functions, and community, while still being very accessible, resilient, and environmentally sustainable.

Requirements

The competition invites undergraduate and graduate students who are enrolled in architecture courses at accredited member schools in the USA, Canada, and Mexico to take part. Individual or group submissions of up to five students with a faculty sponsor are permitted. The judges do not know whose work is whose to maintain impartiality and each entry must clearly present concrete masonry as the main building system.

Jury

The selection of jury consists of architects, educators, and experts from the industry boasting experience of many years in the areas of concrete masonry design, architectural education, and public infrastructure. The projects are assessed through the lens of the strength of their concept, the extent to which they integrate the material, the way they resolve the program, the quality of their contextual response, and the overall coherence of their design.
