COTAA #2 – Exploring the Concept of the Double in Architecture

Home » Competitions » COTAA #2 – Exploring the Concept of the Double in Architecture

The concept of the double has long intrigued and unsettled philosophers, psychologists, and artists, emerging as a site of tension between self and other, reality and illusion, truth and distortion. The double is a paradox—identical yet different, a reaffirmation yet an erasure. Acting as both a mirror and a rupture, it confirms and undermines what it replicates, exposing the fragility of authenticity, permanence, perception, and authorship. At its core, the double reveals that nothing—whether an idea, entity, or system—is ever truly singular or self-contained.

The second issue of COTAA delves into the complexities and contradictions of the double in architecture, tracing how thinkers from Plato, Freud, and Lacan to Baudrillard, Derrida, Deleuze, and Blanchot have grappled with the idea. This open call serves as an invitation to question and rethink the possibilities of doubling in architectural theory and practice.
