Create an amorphous playground made of undulating mountains

Shanghai-based XISUI Design has created an unfamiliar playground using symmetrical modeling and drainage optimization simulation.

To allocate indoor and outdoor spaces according to the complexity and steepness of the terrain.

Named Natural and Organic: Red Dunes Playtopia, the stadium, located in Guanggang New Town,

of Guangzhou, China, takes an innovative approach to stadium design using advanced technology tools.

Creating undulating hills, made up of concrete, the structure takes various forms of mountain-like bridges with space probes,

Along with the planets to observe.

Activity space on undulating terrain

The red field seamlessly integrates functional structures within the natural terrain,

to evoke the “magic of a mountain nest or a tree house in the woods”.

Thanks to the cave-like spaces, children can move around the place,

while providing a 360-degree experience throughout the playground.

And the feeling of inner and outer relationship is completely removed in the project.

A cave-like space for children

XISUI Design used boundary modeling and structural form-finding algorithms

to blend the outdoor space harmoniously with its natural surroundings.

It aims to inspire both children and adults to immerse themselves in the joy of outdoor play and exploration.

Frontier topography design

Through the digital generation, the terrain is designed to suit the complexity

and steepness of the terrain, providing distinct areas for different age groups.

The children’s activity facilities blend seamlessly with the natural environment,

forming a cohesive space.

The digital calculating of natural drainage

Through the application of accurate calculations and simulations,

these calculations allowed the development of a comprehensive natural drainage system,

effectively managing the flow of rainwater despite the undulating terrain.

This innovative approach eliminates the need for surface drainage outlets,

allowing rainwater to disperse naturally into the green spaces and maximum dedicated drainage outlets.

concrete shell structure

The project is described as a unique challenge in terms of form and structure with its undulating concrete shell structure,

The project mimics the cave-like topography of the landscape,

providing climbing spaces above and sheltered areas below.

difficult climbing facilities

To achieve this, the studio was inspired by the “load-transferring mechanism of natural arches”.

The concrete shell is characterized by large spacing and very thin structural thickness.

By merging with the landscape, it enhances the visual coherence of the artificial structure,

reduces column presence, and improves spatial efficiency.
