Design of the inaugural Basel Pavilion made of recycled building components by Architekturwoche Basel,
Architekturwoche Basel (AWB) is a biennial event that will debut in May,
as a platform to discuss architecture and urban development,
through the lens of sustainable building and the circular economy.
The inaugural edition also marks the launch of the first Basel Pavilion,
a temporary structure intended to showcase new possibilities for eco-friendly building practices.
The winning design, named Loggia Basileana, was created by the practice of Isla architecture.
It is made from reused building components and houses
a series of units that form a continuous pedestrian walkway along the train tracks at the Dreispitz site.
Under the theme “Real Räume” (“Real Spaces”),
AWB will study local urban transformation processes and how “digitization,
migration, climate change and the pandemic” have transformed public spaces.

Featuring lectures, guided tours, workshops, exhibitions, films, concerts and performances,
the program targets a wide audience, with the scope of promoting dialogue between experts and champions of architecture.
Mallorca-based architecture firm Isla, co-founded by Marta Colón de Carvajal and Juan Palencia,
has won a two-stage international competition for the first Basel Pavilion.
The design and construction processes should be based on an online catalog
of reused building components available from Basel and the surrounding area.
The architects have proposed a series of units made of various reusable components grouped under a pitched roof.
And As the architects explained, “the pavilion’s general, linear space has a direct relationship to the imagination of the city of Basel on the east bank of the Rhine,
where all the city’s residents and social classes mingle during spring and summer.”
The pavilion is an initiative of the collective and planning office Architektur Basel Zirkular,
which specializes in circular economy and reuse within the construction sector,
and was responsible for creating a component catalog that includes materials from regional deconstruction sites.
The pavilion will be open to the public on May 10 as the venue for the Architekturwoche Basel.
Basel is recognized as the architectural capital of Switzerland,
and hardly any other region is home to so many internationally active architectural offices.
The Architektur Dialoge Basel Foundation is now launching a new biennial architecture and urban development platform Architekturwoche Basel (AWB).
In order to showcase the highly diverse possibilities of building culture,
experience and enthusiasm in the city and the surrounding area,
the first edition will take place from May 9-15, 2022.
