Dubbed the most important new museum in Australia,
Powerhouse Parramatta is set to open to the public in 2025.
Designed by Moreau Kusunoki and the Sydney-based firm Genton, the new museum
Located in a historic location in western Sydney,
it is the largest cultural development in Australia since the Sydney Opera House.
It is scheduled to open in early 2025.
The 32,579 square meter museum is located in the heart of Western Sydney in Parramatta.
It is bordered by the river and is home to one of the fastest growing and most diverse communities in Australia.

Design features
The building includes 7 large exhibition spaces along with educational and digital studios,
a cinema, an 800-seat theater, an extensive rooftop garden, restaurants and cafes.
The museum will also consist of 30 residential studios that will bring together scholars,
researchers, and artists to collaborate with Powerhouse and its communities.
In addition, the Lang Walker Family Academy will include 60 beds within the Museum District for remote students
to immerse themselves in new science, technology, and cultural learning experiences.
The green public space between the museum and the river will be open 24 hours a day.
To connect the community with industry and learning,
and to support festival events and programs for audiences of up to 10,000.
The priority will be to invest in First Nations communities to promote self-determination and the shared responsibility to engage a generation.
The museum is one of the largest and most complex architecture and construction projects currently underway in Australia.
The building’s design was designed by Paris-based architects Moreau Kusunoki,
who serves as lead designer.
Moreau Kusunoki is working in partnership with Australian architecture firm Genton,
who will serve as the local architect.
The exoskeleton concept design is led by the Japanese lead engineer,
Jun Sato, founder of Jun Sato Engineering,
whose work on high tensile architectural facades is legendary.
Powerhouse Sydney has its origins in the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences.
Founded in 1879, it is located at the intersection of art, design, science and technology.
It is currently undertaking a historic $1.4 billion infrastructure regeneration program across its four Sydney sites,
led the creation of the flagship museum, Powerhouse Parramatta;
expanded research and public facilities at Powerhouse Castle Hill;
Ultimo’s iconic Powerhouse renovation; and the ongoing operation of the Sydney Observatory.
