In addressing the accessibility challenges of the 19th-century Montijo Municipal Gallery, a thoughtful intervention was designed a small yet impactful public work combining a lift and an 80 m² garden. Nestled in the heart of the city center, this project transforms an underutilized adjacent plot into a tranquil retreat, blending historical preservation with contemporary functionality.

A Hortus Conclusus for Modern Urban Life

The design reimagines the space as a ‘hortus conclusus’ (enclosed garden), structured into two distinct outdoor “rooms” with varying elevations. These areas foster mental relaxation, offering an atmosphere that balances public accessibility with intimate seclusion. The interplay between the garden and the surrounding urban fabric sparks curiosity, as glimpses of each are selectively revealed through a strategically placed metal railing at the building’s apex.

Materiality & Sensory Experience

The sandy cement mortar-plastered walls unify the space, emphasizing scale, proportion, and the dynamic play of light and shadow. This choice of material not only complements the historic structure but also enhances the garden’s textural and visual harmony, creating a soothing environment for visitors.

Bridging Past & Present

By integrating a discreet lift within the historic framework, the project respects the building’s heritage while ensuring inclusivity. The garden serves as both a functional transition space and a meditative pocket within the bustling city, proving that even small urban interventions can significantly improve public well-being and architectural cohesion.

✦ ArchUp Editorial Insight

This project thoughtfully merges accessibility and tranquility by introducing a lift and enclosed garden to Montijo’s historic gallery. The design succeeds in creating a serene, semi-private escape while maintaining a dialogue with its urban surroundings. However, the reliance on partial visibility through railings might limit engagement for passersby, potentially reducing its impact as a truly public space. Despite this, the careful material selection and respect for the building’s heritage demonstrate how sensitive interventions can enhance both functionality and aesthetic value in historic settings.
