Despite technological advancements such as video conferencing and drones, the growth of airports worldwide continues to thrive due to global commerce and an enduring demand for travel. The airport terminal, a relatively new architectural typology, is essential in the same way as traditional civic buildings like city halls, courthouses, libraries, museums, and theaters. Airports are complex entities that serve not only as transportation hubs but also as workplaces, centers of commerce, recreational spaces, and cultural resources.
Overview of the Fentress Global Challenge
The Fentress Global Challenge (FGC) is an annual international design competition for students. Since its inception in 2011, it has attracted thousands of entries from over 75 countries, representing a significant exploration into the future of architecture and promoting innovative design in public architecture.
Eligibility Criteria
FGC is open to graduate and undergraduate students pursuing architecture or engineering degrees at accredited universities, as well as recent graduates within the last four years. Participants can enter individually or form teams of up to three members, with awards being split among team members.
Design Guidelines
Participants are challenged to envision a terminal building for the year 2100. Concepts must create a new airport terminal, employing forecasts for population, environmental conditions, and modes of travel. The design should reflect Fentress’ Touchstone 2, using context to create identity. Entrants are encouraged to improve upon at least one primary factor influencing airport terminal design, such as mobility, technology, and passenger experience. Additionally, the design must achieve sustainability and resiliency, adapting to changing conditions while minimizing negative impacts on people and the environment.
Participants can choose between two site selection options: either establish the new terminal at an existing airport requiring expansion or site it at a location where an airport does not yet exist, considering its potential as a catalyst for economic and social development.
Evaluation Criteria
Submissions will be evaluated based on clear and concise communication of ideas, innovative design solutions, and compelling graphics. The design must honor the site’s context and culture, address sustainability and resiliency, demonstrate clear planning and organization, and align with future perspectives in aviation and technology.
Awards
The competition offers substantial awards, with the first place receiving $10,000, second place $3,000, third place $2,000, and two People’s Choice Awards of $1,000 each.
Competition Schedule
The competition was announced in November 2023, with the design submission deadline set for October 1, 2024. The shortlist will be announced on November 1, 2024, and winners will be announced on December 1, 2024.
