The Chinese Pavilion has installed 50 giant roller coasters that create a media pathway,

inviting visitors to 40 Years of Urbanism at this year’s Venice Architecture Biennale.

The exhibition is described as “a mesmerizing corridor that evokes a sense of wandering past buildings”.

Entitled Renewal: A Symbiotic Narrative, the exhibition, curated by Ruan Xing,

explores the relationship between traditional and contemporary elements,

About how cities can respond to the revitalization processes in China with new designs and technology,

Questions answered by the design of the wing

The exhibition is enriched with architectural models, graphics, posters, virtual reality technology,

and informative texts that tell the successful story of Chinese experiments in shaping life in high-density environments.

The show provides an in-depth look at 40 years of urbanization in the country with a series of case studies from Shanghai.

The city’s population doubled from 11 million to 25 million during this period,

while per capita living space jumped from 4.5 to 37.4 square metres.

Which is an incredible change.”

Through this uniquely Chinese narrative,

designers seek free discourses about recent and emerging transformations in the built environment:

Where are we going and what is at risk?

Do the conclusions lie in the architectural puzzle of density?

Will the future city feature modernist towers, traditional courtyards, or a symbiosis of the two?

Or will other possibilities come through virtual reality technology and clean and renewable energy?

In the exhibition, “visitors are encouraged to come up with their own answers by ‘watching’,

‘revealing’, ‘reflecting’ and ‘taking a stroll’ in the China Pavilion”.
