Hibiscus flower façade design for panda tower in China,

Atelier Alpha has created tricot-like leather that evokes the pedals of the hibiscus flower,

the flower of Chengdu, China.

The project was named Panda Tower, and it covers an area of 4,785 square meters

and is a new building on the new campus of the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding.

Rising as a cultural landmark, the tower includes an observation deck and exhibition spaces and provides space for sightseeing.

The studio has created a mathematically controlled facade based on the program,

where the tower celebrates a blend of nature and technology with a stunning and detailed aesthetic.

The architects of the panda tower were inspired by bamboo shoots, to create this distinctive language.

Bamboo shoots are widely distributed in Sichuan-Chongqing region.

It is not only a favorite food of Giant Panda, but it is also known as one of the most popular food ingredients in Sichuan cuisine.

Design Features

The Panda Tower consists of 11 floors, and the tower,

whose front façade appears to be cut off, may create a stunning silhouette and impenetrable decoration.

This is done by creating a curved appearance with its rear façade and lattice structure,

giving the building its overall language.

The tower features a wide viewing platform overlooking the central viewing area of the reserve park on each floor,

with the floorboards and buttresses exposed, with no curtain walls or gratings.

The studio has used floorboards and arched structural units for the main body of the tower.

The inspiration for this particular design comes from the Hibiscus flower pedals, the flower of Chengdu.

As the number of pedal plates decreases in an arithmetical sequence from the bottom of the tower to the top,

viewed from the central courtyard, the space shows the beauty of mathematics.

The top of the panda tower curtain wall system contains a mechanical system

that unlocks the façade units according to the angles and speed programmed on special days.

Such as the birth of new giant panda cubs, the return of the giant panda from outdoor facilities,

and important holidays and festivals.

Panda tower data

The Panda Tower is based entirely on software-controlled data,

as the team linked all architectural elements through the limitations of a grasshopper definition.

Geometric constraints define space, mechanical constraints define structural components,

and dynamics control the retractable device.

Where this strict system of mathematical constraints is the most important design of the project,

as well as the basis for the aesthetics of the resulting space.
