New Architectural Event: Intentionally Opaque

Join William Virgil and Majeda Alhinai of Brash Collective at the SCI-Arc Gallery for Intentionally Opaque. The opening reception begins at 6 p.m. on July 29. A sculpture called Intentionally Opaque uses an externalist viewpoint to encourage self-awareness, creativity, and reflection. William Virgil (M.Arch 2, ’16) is a co-founder of Brash Collective and Design Studio, as well as the acting undergraduate co-chair, Making+Meaning coordinator, and Visual Studies faculty at SCI-Arc. He is also an artist, educator, and Army veteran. Virgil has a Master of Human Resources, a Bachelor of Architecture, all from Florida International University, and a Master of Architecture from SCI-Arc.

At Kent State University, Syracuse University, and the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute School of Architecture (RPI), Virgil has served as a guest reviewer. He gave a talk at RPI before going back to teach at SCI-Arc. Virgil worked with Gehry Partners and assisted Frank Gehry in a studio looking at prisons of the future while he was a student at SCI-Arc. In the postgraduate Design of Cities program at SCI-Arc, he has additionally instructed studios and seminars. A+D Museum, LACI LA Kretz Innovation Campus, SCI-Arc Gallery, One Night Stand LA with Familiar Primitives design team, Kent CAED, Armstrong Gallery in Ohio, and Arsenal Gallery in Poland have all hosted domestic and international exhibitions of Virgil’s work.

Majeda Alhinai is a designer, artist, educator, and the co-founder of Brash Collective, an interdisciplinary design collective that works across sizes and media (M.Arch ’16, MS Design Theory and Pedagogy ’17). Her work combines her background in architecture, art, and design as well as her identity as a “third culture” product. She has published articles in Sekka Magazine and the Alserkal Arts Foundation, as well as participated in numerous exhibitions in the MENA region, the US, and Europe.

At Kent State CAED, she was appointed as the first Schidlowski Emerging Faculty Fellow in 2017. During her year-long residency, which culminated in a gallery exhibition, she did research and taught architecture studios.

China has a bachelor’s degree in architecture from the University of Nottingham (UK), a master’s degree in design theory and pedagogy, and a master’s degree in architecture from SCI-Arc, where she won a graduate thesis award for her investigation of surface depth and digital fabrication applications. She has experience working with architectural and design firms in Austria, Oman, and Los Angeles. She currently exhibits her work and works on her art practice while teaching masterclasses and seminars at design and art institutes across the world.
