Fundació Mies van der Rohe – Barcelona City Council has launched an international competition of ideas to remodel 10 permanent blind walls, spread across the city’s 10 districts, with the goal of leaving a lasting legacy in Barcelona. The competition is open to young architects worldwide. This initiative is part of Barcelona’s nomination by UNESCO-UIA to be the World Capital of Architecture 2026.

The Barcelona City Council and the Fundació Mies van der Rohe are organizing an international competition of ideas to remodel 10 Blind Walls in the 10 districts of the city of Barcelona. The council sees this as an opportunity to spread awareness and engage in global debate about the added value of the quality of urban space and its impact on the quality of life in cities, given that Barcelona has been nominated by UNESCO-UIA to be the World Capital of Architecture 2026.

A task contained within a transient event, like the World Capital of Architecture, that aims to create a legacy that endures and offers answers to actual problems for all time.

We are searching for solutions to the split in the terrain and the rift in the urban structure caused by these nameless barriers dividing properties, which leave the vision in a condition of perpetual provision. suggestions that tackle constructive and habitability issues and turn these barriers into facades that address public space issues in addition to enhancing their visual impact.The jury for the competition will choose a winning proposal, along with a second and third reward, for each area from among those that were submitted there.

As part of the World Capital of Architecture initiative and as a lasting legacy of Barcelona as the 2026 World Architecture Capital UNESCO-UIA, the winning plans will be executed whenever feasible for their inauguration in 2026.

Prizes

  • First prize: 3.000,00 €
  • Second prize: 1.500,00 €
  • Third prize: 750 €
  • There are 3 prizes for each of the 10 locations.
  • Up to three honourable mentions with no monetary prize may be awarded for each site, to be decided by the Jury.
