Life On Move is running an international competition that invites architects, designers, and creative thinkers to rethink a fixed home as a movable one. The main goal of the competition is to come up with mobile homes that will be suitable for the changing lifestyles of people, the movement of people, and changes in the environment and the different contexts in which they live. These homes must be functional in urban, rural, and natural areas. The challenge not only arises from the fact that designers are to consider home in a new and different way but also as an idea that is going to be trendy in the future, and as a wise and living solution that is going to last. What the competition does is to prove the architect’s responsiveness to such modern demands as migration, environmental uncertainty, and changing lifestyles. A home can only be a moving concept that goes with its inhabitants and conforms to their needs.

This challenge is highly relevant and applicable since many societies are experiencing housing shortages, climate changes, and lifestyle modifications. Having designed properly, a mobile home can have a smaller environmental impact, provide flexibility, and offer a feeling of home no matter what the location is. The challenge encourages the participation of very creative, responsible, and visionary ideas. The designers may present their designs which will be the best in comfort, efficiency, flexibility, and environmental awareness all at once. The aim of Life On Move is to create a new type of dwelling that accepts the above-mentioned qualities as the core of its characterization.

Competition Overview and Requirements

The competition accepts entries from single persons or groups of up to four members. Anyone like designers, practitioners, students, and imaginative minds are allowed to participate regardless of their location. The submissions should be made in English.

The design must be a proposal for a mobile house that can live in a city, a rural area and a natural place. The design should comprise the areas for living, sleeping, cooking, bathing, and storage while being able to accommodate the different contexts. Features that can be added are those that have the ability to expand, shrink, have balconies, terraces or modular extensions that are adaptable to the various climates and site conditions.

The design should not only be compact, but also be comfortable, functional, adaptable and sensitive to the environment. The participants should take into account how to organize space, what materials to use, and how to integrate with different environments.

Architectural Analysis

Life On Move’s design principle mainly revolves around the concepts of adaptability, flexibility, mobility, and resilience. The designers are given the task to create houses that can shift along with the people living in them and also adjust to the different environments. The spatial organization needs to be not only efficient but also multifunctional. The areas for living, sleeping, cooking, bathing, and storing things have to be built together within a very limited space in a way that is still comfortable and allows for some privacy. The outdoor facilities like terraces, balconies, or retractable parts help the buildings to adjust to the climate, landscape, or social needs.

The selection of materials and systems is of utmost importance. The materials should be light, strong, able to withstand the weather, and be either modular or prefabricated so they can easily be assembled, taken apart, and moved. The use of eco-friendly materials together with energy-efficient systems makes it possible to be responsible for the environment and adaptable in different areas. Mobile houses may come with off-grid systems providing more autonomy and resilience.

Context awareness is a must. The house, regardless of being in an area with a high urban density, a rural setting, or amidst nature, should be able to deal with the local climate, soil, resources, and user needs. Design should be such that it keeps comfort, privacy, and the sense of self but still adapts to the changing circumstances. This competition brings to light the notion that the house must be immovable, thereby giving rise to the concept of a flexible, mobile, and context-sensitive typology.

Competition Importance

Life On Move tackles global trends like migration, urbanization, climate change, and changing lifestyles. It advises architects to create houses that cope with uncertainty, movement, and environmental constraints. The contest broadens the range of housing types to consist of mobile, eco-friendly, and adaptable solutions. Creators can work on small, effective, and location-sensitive homes that are considerate of nature and people’s rights.

The contest welcomes creativity in the areas of material, spatial organization, mobility, sustainability, and social adaptability. It encourages the conceptualization of the dwelling in relation to mobility, climate, environment, and identity. Life On Move is creating resilient, flexible, and humane housing models in a world facing environmental and social challenges.
