Louis Vuitton has transformed its New York flagship store, currently under renovation, into a striking display of its iconic luggage design while temporarily relocating its retail operations to a nearby location. The Louis Vuitton Flagship Store, situated on East 57th Street and 5th Avenue, is covered with a facade resembling a stack of oversized trunks, celebrating the brand’s rich heritage.

The design of the temporary facade, created by Louis Vuitton’s in-house team, features six grey trunks stacked in descending size, inspired by the 19th-century Trianon Grey canvas. Chrome-plated steel handles, locks, and rivets further emphasize the brand’s craftsmanship, with intricate details like hand-welded steel corners and etched rivets bearing the Louis Vuitton moniker.

Temporary Relocation and Unique Sculptures

During the flagship’s renovation, Louis Vuitton has opened a temporary store at 6 East 57th Street. This five-story location houses the brand’s first U.S. café, alongside retail spaces for men’s and women’s collections and a chocolate shop.

The interiors of the temporary store maintain an exposed concrete structure complemented by a palette of light woods and neutral tones. Notably, four towering 16-meter-tall sculptures, developed in collaboration with OMA partner Shohei Shigematsu, dominate the lobby atrium. These sculptures, inspired by Louis Vuitton trunks, feature various materials like Monogram canvas, historic stripes, and metallic finishes, representing the evolution of the brand’s timeless pieces.

A Blend of Heritage and Innovation

Louis Vuitton’s temporary store reflects its commitment to sustainability and creativity. Furniture from the original flagship is repurposed alongside new designs by renowned creators such as Carlo Mollino and Charlotte Perriand. The facade of the temporary location is adorned with vibrant exterior pendants and oversized sculptures of a giraffe and ostrich, adding whimsy to the retail experience.

The renovation of the flagship store is expected to potentially double its size. The temporary store, however, will close once construction is complete, leaving a memorable impression on visitors and highlighting Louis Vuitton’s dedication to innovative design and heritage.
