A pair of Meter lamps with shades inspired by Japanese rice paper lanterns were created in collaboration between the Swedish design business Pholc and the Danish design team of Maria Bruun and Anne Dorthe Vester.

Pholc created the lamps with a statuesque and architectural quality in mind. They are titled One Meter and Half Meter in accordance with their taller and shorter heights.

The Meter lamps include a translucent ribbed paper shade above that diffuses a soft, warm light, and a robust aluminum base that stands out.

“We wanted to create a new interpretation of the classic rice paper lamp,” Bruun explained. “A design that has a strong sculpture base while still maintaining its lightness and gentleness. To produce a distinctive presence and sculptural reference, we experimented with several materials.”

Maja Norburg, creative director of Pholc, stated, “The designers were given a directive to produce a floor lamp with a height of approximately one meter that emits a gentle and uniform ambient light.” “The lamp should also serve as a captivating sculptural piece that sparks curiosity.”

Because of its height, the One Meter light is meant to be used as a floor lamp, while the Half Meter light can be used as a table light.
