New 800-Metre Tunnel Opens as Part of Umm Suqeim Street Development in Dubai
On August 4, 2025, Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) opened a new 800-metre tunnel with four lanes in each direction. This is part of the ongoing development of Umm Suqeim Street. The tunnel stretches between the intersections with Al Khail Road and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road. It aims to enhance traffic flow and accommodate the city’s rapid urban and population growth.
Strategic East–West Corridor Development
The Umm Suqeim Street Development Project spans 4.6 kilometers. It includes major improvements at the intersection with Al Barsha South, near Kings’ School, where the new underpass was built. A signalised surface-level junction was also developed to improve traffic regulation.
This project is part of a broader plan to develop the Umm Suqeim–Al Qudra corridor, running from Jumeirah Street to Emirates Road. This project covers a total distance of 16 kilometers. The corridor is considered one of Dubai’s most important strategic infrastructure projects. It aims to improve east–west connectivity across the city and link it with major north–south roads.
Enhancing Road Capacity and Reducing Travel Time
According to Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors at RTA, the project improves connections between four key arterial roads:
- Sheikh Zayed Road
- Al Khail Road
- Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road
- Emirates Road
The new tunnel increases Umm Suqeim Street’s capacity to 16,000 vehicles per hour in both directions. This significantly reduces travel time between Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and Al Khail Road by 61%—from 9.7 minutes to 3.8 minutes.
Serving Over One Million Residents in Key Communities
The project plays a vital role in improving access to several high-density residential and development areas, including:
- Al Barsha South 1, 2, and 3
- Dubai Hills
- Arjan
- Dubai Science Park
These communities are home to more than one million residents. This makes the development a key contributor to daily mobility and road efficiency in Dubai’s expanding urban zones.
