Introducing one-of-a-kind ideas, German-based studio Haus Otto experiments with new ways of producing glasses.

Named ‘One Dollar Glasses’ and based on the eponymous non-profit organization EinDollarBrille e.V. established by Martin Aufmuth – this fascinating project utilizes methods of bending wire to allow those in need to make their eyewear for only $1.

Across the globe, more than 150 million people are currently in need of a pair of glasses but don’t have the financial means to access them.

“Our vision is to solve this problem,” says Patrick Henry Nagel and Nils Körner, founders of Haus Otto. “We went for a range of approaches – the aim was to examine the potential as well as the limits of the system and materials from spring steel to heat shrink tubing and polycarbonate lenses for less than one dollar” they add.

Eyewear plays an important role in one’s appearance and self-expression – keeping this notion in mind the team places importance on allowing people to express themselves and their unique personalities through the glasses they wear with a cost-effective solution.

This collection brilliantly features a diverse range of eyewear with a wide variety of styles and frame shapes.

The initiative not only looks towards design but education as well. It provides all the necessary bending tools and teaches one how to use them to make a pair of glasses – intending to facilitate a level of autonomy within developing countries.

The process additionally supports the population by creating new jobs and guarantees a sustainable outcome.

This series of objects created is further presented as a part of an exhibition with the mission of raising awareness of the issue.
