The “Our Homes: Inclusionary Housing Now” contest aims at getting world-wide architects, urban planners, engineers, artists, and makers to present designs of affordable, decent, and aspirational houses in Cape Town. The contenders will have to rethink the underused public lands of government parking lots and such and convert them into lively neighborhoods that are open to all, and provide opportunities, dignity, and a sense of community. The goal is to tackle spatial inequality while offering low rents, good locations, and vibrant communities at the same time.

The intention is to live close to nature while being part of the city. The proposals should show how housing can be done in a way that people from different backgrounds will be able to live together in one place.

Competition Overview

Participants will suggest housing construction on one of the four predetermined public sites of Cape Town city center. The presently parking lot sites use up valuable land that could be put to the public good through the revitalization process. The plans are to be in tune with the environment, interactive with the urban fabric, and supply housing units that favor social mix, affordability, and eco-friendliness.

The competition is available for single or groups of up to 3 people, both students and professionals. Participants are encouraged to be imaginative, socially conscious, and to use responsible design. It is expected that the contestants will deal with the actual housing need and at the same time take into consideration the limitations caused by the site and the fact that it belongs to the public.

Design & Social Objectives

A competition that dares to propose solutions to the issues of social inequality, urban exclusion, and the shortage of affordable housing is one thing. The other thing is for the designers to come up with ideals for housing that would include all human activities by providing access to good life, transportation, and services while integrating with the community. The proposals should, at the same time, reclaim public land for the public reaping of benefits, turning parking spaces into living areas, and rejuvenating the urban fabric.

The participants must take into account the situation in Cape Town and thus to the density of the city, limitations of the site, existing infrastructure, and local traditions. The architects should be able to mix the realistic with the unorthodox, to deliver the type of housing that can be constructed but also to offer dreams in architecture that restores dignity and opportunity to the people living there. The use of environmental-friendly materials, small size planning, mixed functions, and being aware of the social aspects will be very much welcomed.

Reasons for the Importance of This Competition
