Hawaii property: A historic deal.

A three-home waterfront property in Honolulu sold for $65.75 million, setting a record for Hawaiian home sales.

The six-bedroom mansion, known as Hale Hanohano, or “House of Honor,” is located on Kahala Avenue.

It boasts over 200 feet of beachfront and direct access to Kahala Beach, on the southern tip of Oahu.

The 1.52-acre property includes three homes: the main house and two guest houses connected by skywalks, totaling 11,870 square feet.

It also features a portable garage, landscaped gardens, a heated pool with underwater speakers, and an outdoor kitchen.

The Story of Hawaii’s Luxury Estate

The seller is Susan Ocampo, a technology entrepreneur and principal at Macom Technology Solutions.

She and her late husband, John, purchased three adjacent lots in 2013 and 2014 for a total of $22.2 million.

The Ocampos built the current home, designed by Christian Iserloh and completed in 2018.

One of the lots was used to house a marble-clad home built by Hawaiian developer Chris Hemmeter, which was demolished in 2009.

A Walk of Fame and the Rich

Kahala Street has attracted a variety of business leaders and other celebrities in addition to Hemmeter and Ocampos.

Samsung CEO Lee Kun-hee, actress Liza Minnelli, and eBay founder Pierre Omidyar have also been in attendance.

Ocampo listed the home for sale in January with Derek Kam of Coldwell Banker Island Properties and Noel Beach-Shaw of Hawaii Life, asking $65 million, but it now sells for about $66 million.

Hawaii Real Estate Price History

Previously, the most expensive Hawaii transaction recorded was a $46.1 million property sale on Kauai’s North Shore in 2018.

The most expensive deal on Oahu was a $27.5 million condo that sold in 2023.

The record for the most expensive detached home was set last year with a $26 million waterfront home in Kailua, according to Coldwell Banker.

Many tech billionaires have spent lavishly in Hawaii, but these weren’t typical residential sales.

In 2021, Jeff Bezos reportedly spent $78 million on a 14-acre property in Makena, Maui, which includes a two-acre cove and Hawaii’s only private beach.

The billionaire purchased the holding company that owns the land, not the land itself, according to previous reports.

In addition, Oracle founder Larry Ellison purchased 98% of an island for approximately $300 million in 2012.

PayPal and Palantir co-founder Peter Thiel purchased an island in Makena in 2011, and Mark Zuckerberg spent $53 million on 600 acres of land in 2020 to add to his already substantial holdings in the state.
