Architecture Competition: Rural Revitalization and Regeneration (R3)
A strategic effort called R3 (Rural Revitalization and Regeneration) aims to advance sustainable development and all-encompassing revitalization in rural areas. It highlights advancements in social, environmental, and cultural spheres in addition to the economic growth of rural areas. The goal of the R3 Design Competition is to create a design approach that is informed by “critical regionalism” or “contextualism,” with the goal of submitting ideas and concepts that are intimately tied to the region’s architectural language, environment, economics, and culture.
The competition seeks to advance community sharing, ingenuity, infrastructure, and resource integration while maintaining regional identity and cultural authenticity. Using the region’s tourism resources, contestants must choose a plot inside Shanxiabao Village’s specified territory. The competition is open-ended. The designs ought to represent the R3 tenets from various angles. Cultural resources, the pre-existing architectural language, and the unique urban characteristics of Shanxiabao Village should all be taken into account during the design process.
Challenge
Participants who are enthusiastic about sustainable rural revival, including architects, designers, planners, students, and others, are invited to the R3 competition. It motivates people to make use of Shanxiabao Village’s historical and cultural assets in order to establish an environment that fosters cross-cultural dialogue, preserves the local way of life, and advances sustainable tourism and handicraft development. Submissions of any kind of architectural project are welcome for the competition, including public works, multi-unit buildings, single-family homes, adapted structures, temporary housing, and other architectural scales.
The methods of building and the design process are unrestricted. The suggested designs are to be chosen keeping in mind the surrounding surroundings and the allocated area. It is expected of designers to take into account the integration of contemporary technology with rural history and culture, respect the architectural character and local culture, and provide future development methods that support rural conservation and regeneration. These tactics will also be essential components in the project assessment process. The development strategy should inform the final architectural or spatial design, and the drawings should make the motivations and goals of the design evident.
Site Details
Shanxiabao Village, Wuyi County, Zhejiang Province, China is the location of the project. This community, which dates back more than 300 years, has a rich past and distinctive architecture. Shanxiabao Village is protected and recognized at the national level, having been included in the first batch of China’s Traditional Villages list for its unique cultural and historical importance. The project location is accessible by hiking up the mountain trail and is situated in the Duimenshan Natural Village, which is under the administrative control of Shanxiabao Village.
There is a high vacancy rate and a small population living in this neighborhood right now. Plans for renovation are necessary for future growth in the homestay and tourism businesses because some of the current properties have major structural problems. Participants in the competition can choose a custom-sized piece of land inside the Duimenshan Nature Village area. On the selected plot, it is acceptable to demolish existing buildings in order to create a virtual site where design concepts can be expressed. On the other hand, restricted demolition is allowed as long as it respects the original topography and landform within the defined region.
