Sharp triangular balconies define an apartment building in Bulgaria

The STARH architecture firm, based in Varna, Garcia, designed a residential block, defined by sharp eight-meter balconies.

Design features

The building area is 6170 square meters, and it is named after EOS.

It is a residential building consisting of mixed-use amenities on the ground floor,

while the second and third floors accommodate workshops and offices.

The building mainly includes residential apartments located from the fourth floor to the top,

or the ninth floor, and it is a block drawn with sharp angles and forms a triangular geometry.

The design was inspired by the story of EOS, Greek mythology meaning the goddess of the dawn.

Every morning she would rise to the horizon from the depths of the sea to cast light and disperse the night.

The core is located in Varna, the second largest city in the country.

Building is also located next to the public Sea Garden,

the only thing that separates it from the Black Sea, ensuring that EOS is the first to receive sunlight.

The studio creates a design that matches a constrained triangular outline,

which is the main challenge of the project.

According to the studio, the shape of the plot is the reference for its shape in plan and its distinctive spatial volume structure.

Whiteness and horizontal distribution are typical of the buildings,

and the end result is a building with a distinct silhouette, open to various associations and interpretations.

Design form

Designed as a mixed-use project with mainly a residential programme,

the apartments are distributed from the fourth floor to the upper or ninth floor.

The ground floor is used for the commercial programme,

while the entrance foyer and car lift are used on two underground levels that serve as car parks.

Workshops and offices are arranged on the second and third floors,

providing one staircase and two elevators for vertical communication.

STARH said: “In practice, the apartments are planned in such a way as to provide the interior spaces

with orthogonal layouts, with only the east-facing loggia having triangular borders.

The balconies, up to eight meters long, made of prefabricated concrete,

are located at the corner of the building, challenging the project.
