Competition Brief

The SITUER MILANO 2026 competition which Terraviva and its design brand developed, invites architects and designers to create a complete furniture collection through their design projects. The design task requires participants to create three objects which include one main item and two supporting items that share a common design style.

Intent

The competition demonstrates how small furniture systems maintain identifiable design identities. The ArchUp discussion about furniture design focuses on spatial relationships between materials and their physical arrangement which creates system understanding.

Purpose

The brief requires participants to develop their ideas through theoretical exploration and real-world implementation assessment. Designers must evaluate their objects through spatial relationships which mirrors the interior design section, where element connections determine environmental perception.

Requirements

Entrants must submit one A3 book (420 x 297 mm, horizontal, maximum 20 pages) and two representative images (horizontal, 2560 x 1810 px). The competition welcomes students and architects and designers and artists and engineers and makers and creative individuals to participate. The main element needs to be either a shelving system or console or seating item. The secondary elements can consist of a coat rack and mirror and lamp and tray. Designers can use past competitions to learn about the methods which judges use to evaluate coherence and clarity during similar design assessments.

Jury

The submissions will be evaluated by the board of Castellani.it S.r.l., with the following key jury member:

  1. Camillo Castellani — President of the jury panel and representative of Situér Milano

✦ ArchUp Competition Review

The SITUER MILANO 2026 competition, organised by Terraviva and the Situér Milano design brand, invites participants to develop a coherent furniture collection with three interconnected pieces which offers first prize of €2,500 plus prototyping and royalties. The jury information contains only one member in Camillo Castellani who provides little understanding about their assessment skills. The brief requires design professionals to create both conceptual and practical solutions because it serves as a design document instead of a promotional tool. The registration fees and design work create moderate rewards because participants can develop their portfolios while they work on commercialisable projects which do not lead to instant professional recognition.

Conclusion and Critical Analysis

The SITUER MILANO competition requires its competitors to find a middle ground between innovative ideas and actual production capabilities. The collection needs coherence between its three linked objects and this requirement prevents researchers from testing their hypotheses through their experimental work. The brief rewards practical, systematic thinking over purely conceptual work.

The first prize provides designers with commercialisation rights and royalties but they must assess how their design will be produced through existing manufacturing limits and material properties. The challenge presents an educational opportunity because it reflects current furniture design trends while teaching system thinking to students studying modular furniture, interior systems, or design competitions.

It is crucial not just to craft appealing pieces but also to make sure that the three components work together as a unified and consistent system.
