In the Netherlands, the angular matte-black design of stealth aircraft has inspired the creation of the Stay Under the Radar holiday home, completed by local studios Sander van Schaik and Robert-Jan de Kort Architectuur. Located on a former German military base near De Hoge Veluwe National Park, the retreat is part of the Buitenplaats Koningsweg site, known for its historical aircraft hangars disguised as farmhouses.
Camouflage and Military History
This vacation home is one of eleven properties designed to respond to the theme of camouflage. The angular form and dark exterior of Stay Under the Radar mimic the design of the F117 Nighthawk stealth aircraft, characterized by its sharp lines and matte-black finish. Set slightly above the ground on steel decking, the house’s bold geometric shape creates the illusion of an aircraft landing in the forest.
Black Exterior and Ventilation
The black synthetic rubber exterior, along with strategically placed facade openings, provides both ventilation and a striking aesthetic. Inside, black-painted timber and steel elements define the living spaces, while the upper-floor bedroom is illuminated by a large glass roof. The home’s ventilation system takes advantage of a chimney effect, naturally cooling the structure during warmer months.
Award-Winning Architecture
The innovative design of Stay Under the Radar recently won the 2024 Heuvelink Prize, recognizing it as the best construction project in Arnhem.
