Taipei Design Award 2026
Competition Brief
The Taipei Design Award 2026 is the 19th edition of an international open design competition organised by the Department of Economic Development of Taipei City Government and executed by China Productivity Center. First established in 2008, it has operated under several names before settling on its current title in 2022. It is endorsed by the International Council of Design (ICoD), the International Federation of Interior Architects/Designers (IFI), and the World Design Organization (WDO), and operates a cooperation agreement with the iF Design Award.
The award spans four categories: Industrial Design, Visual Communication Design, Public Space Design, and the Taipei Impact Design Award, which focuses on sustainability and inclusion in the context of urban development. Entry is free of charge and open to participants worldwide at all professional levels, from students to experienced practitioners.
Intent
The competition operates under the core vision of making design a driving force for a better future. It seeks designs with commercial potential and social value, encourages responses to contemporary issues, and aims to establish Taipei as an international hub for creative exchange. The Taipei Impact Design Award, introduced in 2023, sits within this broader framework with a specific focus on designs that address urban issues, improve quality of life, and promote net-zero carbon emissions, humanistic care, and shared inclusion.
Purpose
The competition is structured as both an award and a platform for cross-disciplinary dialogue between industry, society, and urban development. Winning works are exhibited, published in the official themed journal, and announced on the official website to facilitate contact with businesses for future design projects. Grand Prize, Golden, Silver, and Bronze Award winners from outside Taiwan are invited to the award ceremony with airline tickets and accommodation provided by the organiser.
Categories
Industrial Design covers mass-producible product design including transportation tools, equipment, daily utilities, household goods, and IT products. Visual Communication Design covers immersive experience creation, digital graphic design, identity, posters, packaging, and print. Public Space Design covers spaces open for public use, government buildings, and private establishments partially open to the public. The Taipei Impact Design Award is a separate track themed around sustainability and inclusion, with its own Grand Prize and dedicated brochure.
Requirements
Participation is open to individuals and teams worldwide. Entries must be original works completed after 1 January 2024. Each submission requires an English work title and a concept description in English of up to 1,200 characters, plus up to 5 images in JPG format. If AI tools were used in creating the work, a full description of their use is mandatory. Finalists must submit physical works, mockups, or A1-format mounted prints for the final selection stage, along with higher-resolution digital files. Physical submissions must fit within specified dimensional limits and participants are solely responsible for shipping costs and customs fees. Works winning Grand Prize, Golden, Silver, or Bronze Awards have their physical mockups transferred to the ownership of Taipei City Government.
Jury
The jury for each category is composed of international experts drawn from more than two different continents and nationalities. The judging process is conducted independently, with the organiser guaranteeing no interference. The jury’s decision is final. Specific jury member names for 2026 have not yet been published. Evaluation criteria prioritise applicability, mass production viability, and marketability, followed by creativity, functionality, and aesthetics. Additional assessment considers integration of cross-disciplinary innovations across art, design, and technology. Three partner organisations each contribute a special award: ICoD for Visual Communication, IFI for Public Space Design, and WDO for Industrial Design.

✦ ArchUp Competition Review
The Taipei Design Award is a well-established municipal competition with nineteen years of operation, international endorsements from ICoD, IFI, and WDO, and a substantial prize pool that makes it one of the more financially meaningful design awards available to practitioners and students worldwide at no entry cost. The Public Space Design and Taipei Impact Design Award categories are of direct relevance to readers working in architecture and urban design, particularly given the impact track’s explicit focus on sustainability, urban resilience, and social inclusion. The iF Design Award cooperation pathway adds a credible bonus for finalists seeking broader international recognition. The requirement for physical mockup submission at the finalist stage, with all logistics costs borne by participants, is a structural barrier for international entrants that should be factored into any decision to enter. Jury composition is promised to be multinational and impartial but individual names are not published in advance, which limits transparency. The condition that physical works by top prize winners are transferred to Taipei City Government is notable and should be understood before submission.
Final Thoughts
Taipei Design Award 2026 is a credible, well-funded, and internationally endorsed competition offering genuinely competitive prize money across four categories at zero entry cost. For architects and designers working in public space or urban impact, it represents a legitimate opportunity for international recognition backed by a municipal government with a consistent track record. Registration is open until 30 June 2026 at taipeidaward.taipei.
