The 3XN-designed Quay Quarter Tower wins the 2022 World Building of the Year award,
The Quay Quarter tower, designed by 3XN Sydney, is named for the Danish architecture practice,
as the best global building for 2022 at the fifteenth annual World Architecture Festival,
Which was held at the FIL Exhibition Center in Lisbon from November 30 to December 2, 2022.
The Quay Quarter Tower (QQT), a 206-metre-high tower located near the Sydney Opera House,
It is an office building arranged as a vertical village,
This creates a sense of community and provides spaces focused on collaboration,
health and well-being, and outdoor terraces.
Consisting of five stacked variable volumes,
3XN employed a radical sustainability strategy that included recycling the existing tower.
The series of stacked atria also creates a social column with exceptional views,
while also allowing daylight deep into each floor.
The winner was tasked with providing a building in a world-class location,
and retaining a significant percentage of an existing fifty-year-old commercial tower.
The result is a perfect example of adaptive reuse.
It has an excellent carbon story,
and is an example of proactive workspace design produced pre-Covid that nonetheless
provided a healthy and inviting space for post-pandemic users.
The client was willing to take the risk of building an idea on a speculative basis.
The competition jury
The winner has been chosen by a prestigious jury of leading figures in the global architecture industry –
including Tracy Miller, Rogers Stirk Harbor Partners; Joe Noero, Noero Architects;
John Wardle, John Wardle Architects; Issa Diabaté, Kofi & Diabaté Architects,
and Murat Tabanlioglu, Tabanlioglu Architects.
The World Architecture Festival is the largest international architecture event in the world.
This year’s theme, Leaning Together, the festival’s live events program explored and discussed
How architecture has responded to the renewal of collective life after the pandemic,
and in light of commitments to combat climate change.
